Looking after our Environment

We are a Reef Guardian School and our school has adopted a beach to look after.  Each year our Year 7 students design and construct their own tools to assist them in cleaning up one of our Bowen beaches.  After  the Year 7s showed us all their wonderful tools on parade, we talked about how we can help to look after our environment by keeping our beaches clean, putting our rubbish in the bin, and not letting rubbish go into our drains and waterways.  The children participated in a small enactment of what happens when rubbish and chemicals get into our drains and waterways, and also what happens when oil is spilled in the ocean.  We used a plastic turtle, the sea (a bowl), a drain or river (plastic tubing), rubbish (bits of paper, broken matchsticks) chemicals that you can't see (vinegar) and oil, and discussed what happens to our sea life when these things reach the ocean.
