Jacob from Year 3 visited our classroom with a very special dinosaur.  It is remote controlled and very life-like. It looked so real that some of us were a little scared of it.  Jacob answered a lot of our questions about his unique toy but he hasn't yet got a name for it.  We suggested, Spike, Spiky, James . . .  write some comments on our blog and offer your suggestions and help Jacob think of an appropriate name.  Thanks for visiting us, Jacob.

Some children at our school are participating in the Relay for Life.  Our school decided to help support them by wearing a "team" shirt to school on Friday. All those who wore team shirts had to pay a gold coin which was collected by the Relay for Life participants.  We also did our own little "relay" to show our support.  Every class walked the oval for fifteen minutes.

This term in science we are exploring the different materials from which things are made.  We have been looking at things in the world around us, both inside and out.  Recently we sorted objects according to what they were made of - paper, rubber, metal, plastic, glass, wood.

Today we went to see Aladdin and the Magic I-Pod at the Proserpine Theatre. We really enjoyed the show.  Sam and Hayley went up on stage and danced with some of the characters. We all had our photo taken with the I-Pod Genie.

As a part of our English unit we have been exploring signs in our environment and discussing why we have signs.  Over recent weeks we have been busy planning and making a "bus" that we can use in our play. In context with our bus play, we have discussed the need for various signs.  The children decided to make a "Bus Stop" sign, speed signs, ticket signs and a bank sign.  We also made a Bowen sign for our bus.

We have been watching our bean plants grow. Yesterday we measured our plants and showed how tall they have grown on a graph.  Bree's plant is the tallest and Jai's plant is the shortest.

This week we read Pamela Allen's book, The Potato People.  In the book we found a plan, with labels, that showed us how to make potato people.  We followed the plan and made our own little potato man and little potato woman.

Hairy Maclary

We just love the Hairy Maclary books.   As a part of our English unit, we are required to explore a literary series.  We are getting to know all the characters, and the rhymes that go with their names. These are some of the books that we have read.

Looking after our Environment

We are a Reef Guardian School and our school has adopted a beach to look after.  Each year our Year 7 students design and construct their own tools to assist them in cleaning up one of our Bowen beaches.  After  the Year 7s showed us all their wonderful tools on parade, we talked about how we can help to look after our environment by keeping our beaches clean, putting our rubbish in the bin, and not letting rubbish go into our drains and waterways.  The children participated in a small enactment of what happens when rubbish and chemicals get into our drains and waterways, and also what happens when oil is spilled in the ocean.  We used a plastic turtle, the sea (a bowl), a drain or river (plastic tubing), rubbish (bits of paper, broken matchsticks) chemicals that you can't see (vinegar) and oil, and discussed what happens to our sea life when these things reach the ocean.

Science - Living Things

This term we hve been exploring "living things" and what living things need.  As well as finding out about animals and their needs, we have also been learning about plants, what they need and how they grow. We all planted our own bean seeds and have been watching them grow.

Our Worm Farm

We have our worm farm in the classroom again for 2012.  We enjoy feeding our worms our banana peels and apple skins from our lunches.  Because there was lots of white stuff growing in our worm farm, we emailed Mr H (our environmental expert) to find out what was wrong.  There was nothing wrong - this is all part of a normal healthy worm environment, but we did aerate and freshen up the soil just to make sure everything was right.  The photo shows the white "stuff" that we were concerned about.
